I am going to say something that I have been building toward across every monthly report I have analysed this year. July 2026 was a 15-month high for trade on Liv-ex. Value traded was up 38%. Volume was up 36%. US buyers went up 163% year-on-year. And Burgundy — for the first time in years — surpassed Bordeaux in market share, with trade hitting levels not seen since before the 2020 bull run. The August 2026 Vin-X report is not a report about recovery anymore. It is a report about momentum. And there is a meaningful difference between those two words.

Section 01 - The Headline Numbers

A 15-Month High. What That Actually Means.

The 64% buyer-initiated trades number is the one I find most telling. In a healthy, balanced market, roughly half of all trades are initiated by buyers and half by sellers. When buyers are initiating 64% of trades-and that is up from the 2025 average of 58% -it tells you that buyers are chasing wine, not waiting for sellers to come to them. The momentum belongs to the people who want to buy, not the people who want to sell. That is a fundamental market condition shift.

Think of it this way

Imagine a property market where, historically, buyers and sellers both came to the table. Now 64% of deals are being started by buyers calling agents to ask what is available- not sellers listing and waiting. That is not a recovering market. That is a market where demand is outrunning supply, where urgency sits with the buyer, and where prices have one natural direction to move. Fine wine in July 2026 is that property market.

Section 02 - The US Return: 163% Year-on-Year

US Buyers Are Back. Not Cautiously. Emphatically.

Let me put 163% year-on-year in context. A year ago, US buyers had been largely squeezed out of the Liv-ex market by Trump's tariff measures in April 2025. Their share bottomed at 16.5% in Q2 2025. By July 2026 they were at 29.6% -and rising. In the week of 14-20 August, when European merchants took their summer break, US buyers stepped in and accounted for 45% of all purchase value on Liv-ex. That is almost half the entire global fine wine exchange driven by one buyer region for two weeks. Their 29.6% July share is their highest since March 2025- before the tariff shock.

Why are they back so aggressively? The report gives us two clear reasons. First, a stronger US dollar makes European wine cheaper relative to domestic prices-they are effectively buying at a discount versus what they pay at home. Second, they need to replenish stocks. The tariff pause and subsequent clarity on the 20% level means the supply chain can function again. Demand deferred is now demand released.

Section 03 — The Regional Share Shift

Burgundy Beats Bordeaux for the First Time in Years

Burgundy at 27.9% edging ahead of Bordeaux at 27.1% in July is significant. But the mid-August figure is what is really striking: 42.8%. That means at one point in August, nearly half of all fine wine traded on the entire global exchange was Burgundy. The report states this is at levels above the 2020 to 2022 bull run - the last period of extreme market enthusiasm. DRC, Leflaive, Ramonet, and d'Auvenay alone accounted for a third of all Burgundy trade in July. And the top traded wine of the month? Domaine Leroy Romanee St Vivant 2013 at £84,758 per case (12x75cl).

Section 04 - Top Traded Wines

What People Were Actually Buying in July - and What the Prices Say

Two Salon Le Mesnil vintages in the top five tells you everything about what serious collectors value right now. Salon produces in only three or four years per decade - compared to the Grand Marques who bottle five to six vintages per decade producing 500,000 bottles. Only 8,000 magnums of the 2008 were made. That scarcity is exactly why the 2008 commanded £26,425 for 6 magnums while comparable Champagne at similar quality but higher production trades at a fraction of that price.

Section 05 — YTD Top Performers

The Wines Delivering Double-Digit Returns in 2026

La Fleur-Petrus 2021 at +42.7% year-to-date is the standout. Let me make that tangible.

Three of the top five YTD performers are Rhone wines. That matters because the Rhone index has been showing weakness at the headline level all year. But the individual wine performance - Rayas up 37.5%, Beaucastel Hommage up 24.7%, Rayas 2015 up 30.4% in July alone - shows the index is masking what is actually happening at the label level.

Every Region in August 2026 — What the Indices Say and What They Miss

Section 07 — Five-Year Champions

Where Patient Capital Built Real Wealth

Burgundy — Three Wines Above 73% Over Five Years

Italy — Soldera Dominates Every Five-Year Ranking

All five top Italian five-year performers are Soldera Case Basse. Different vintages, same producer, same direction: up between 40% and 88% over five years. This is not luck. Soldera is one of the most limited-production, critically acclaimed producers in Tuscany - and the data across five consecutive vintages shows what that combination does to price over time.

Section 08 - The Climate Story You Cannot Ignore

44°C in Bordeaux. The Earliest Burgundy Harvest in 500 Years. What This Means for Investors.

Climate Alert-Summer 2026

Wildfires. Record Heat. The Earliest Burgundy Harvest Since 1556. Fine Wine Investment Just Got a New Variable.

Bordeaux: Temperatures reached 44°C in late June. More days above 40°C than in the entire 105 years of prior records. Wildfires scorched 42,000 hectares of the Gironde - an area four times the size of Paris — displacing 224,000 people. President Macron declared a national disaster. The view currently is that smoke taint is not a factor for the 2026 vintage, but the harvest outcome remains to be confirmed. Wine tourism fell 60% this summer.

Burgundy: The 2026 harvest began on 13th August - the earliest in 500 years. The last comparable date was 16th August 1556. Research shows that between 1988 and 2018, the average Beaune harvest moved forward by thirteen days versus the preceding historical period. Four of the warmest Burgundy years since 1354 are all in the 21st Century: 2003, 2018, 2020, and 2025. 2026 is likely to join that list.

What this means for investment wine specifically?

Climate disruption creates two effects simultaneously: it threatens future supply - potentially another very small harvest like 2025 - and it accelerates the case for owning existing investment-grade wine that is already bottled and stored. The rarer back vintages become, the more every case already held in a bonded warehouse increases in relative value. The wildfires did not touch the investment wines. But the conditions that cause them make fine wine in bond a more structurally compelling asset with every passing summer.

Section 09 — What This Means for You

Current Investors and New Investors — What August 2026 Tells Each of You

If you already hold fine wine

The 15-month trade high is the most positive context your portfolio has had since 2022

  • 64% buyer-initiated trades means demand is chasing supply - the market is working in sellers' favour.

  • If you hold Burgundy: trade is now above bull-run levels. DRC, Leflaive, Ramonet are seeing elite demand. The exit window for top Burgundy is opening.

  • If you hold Champagne: Champagne 50 up 2.6% over the year, led July as the strongest monthly performer. Dom-Perignon 2018 releasing September fresh catalyst for the whole region.

  • If you hold Italian wines: Italy led by volume for only the second time on record. Soldera five-year returns up to 87.9%. The global buyer base has never been broader.

  • If you hold Rhone: the index has been soft but individual wines have led the entire market YTD. Your specific holdings matter far more than the headline index.

  • If you hold Bordeaux: the index is -0.3% YTD but La Fleur-Petrus is up 42.7%. Older blue-chip vintages -Mouton 1996- are actively trading. August share recovered to 37.4%.

If you are considering entering now

The Vin-X report is direct: 2026 is a key time to invest in wine

  • Trade at a 15-month high means liquidity is improving -easier to exit when you choose to.

  • Italy: accessible price points, consistent quality, Soldera five-year returns up to 87.9%, and demand from five different buyer regions simultaneously.

  • Rhone: Rayas and Beaucastel delivering 25-37% YTD from wines still at attractive prices. The report explicitly calls Rhone "significant value"-a direct buying signal.

  • Champagne: Dom Perignon 2018 releasing September-entering before a new vintage launch means you buy before that fresh market attention arrives.

  • Burgundy at 2019 peak index levels with trading above bull-run intensity- this is a confirmed momentum market, not a speculative one.

  • Climate risk is increasing future supply pressure - the case for owning existing fine wine in bond is structurally stronger than it was a year ago.

  • UK CGT exemption for bonded wine remains in place-every gain between now and exit is yours.

The August 2026 report closes with a direct statement from Vin-X: "Analysis supports the view that the market has bottomed out and is on the turn. 2026 is a key time to invest in wine." That is not a sales line. It is the conclusion from a report that shows trade at a 15-month high, Burgundy above bull-run levels, US buyers at their highest share since March 2025, buyer-initiated trades at 64%, and individual wines delivering 25-43% returns year-to-date. The data earned that conclusion.

My Verdict on August 2026

This Is Not a Recovery Story

Anymore.

This Is a Momentum Story.

Recovery means returning to a previous state. Momentum means building beyond it. In August 2026, Burgundy trade surpassed the bull-run peak. US buying hit a 15-month high. Trade value was up 38% year-on-year. Buyer-initiated trades at 64% confirm that demand is not waiting for sellers - it is going out to find them. That is not recovery. That is acceleration.

The wines that have been quietly appreciating - Salon Le Mesnil, DRC, Soldera, La Fleur-Petrus, Rayas — are now being traded at volumes and prices that confirm the patient investor's thesis. The market has turned. The data has been saying it for six months. The August report removes the last reasonable doubt.
